The Artist Cottage and Studio

An artist retreat on three waterfront acres in Maine. The property is magical with a 180° view of Casco Bay.

The cottage underwent an "honest restoration" in the spring of 2013 and is a rental property in season and a retreat for artists "off". The design brief was to keep the bones and character of the home, and update the needs of guests in 2013. Before beginning the restoration the designer "felt" the spirit of the home by living in the space. Only then did she commence planning the renovation. The previous owner was an engineer and the home is filled with quirky inventions. She carried on the tradition, filling the home with art from Maine.

The stairway was commissioned by the area's artist cooperative, "The Artisans Collective", to excite an otherwise non-descript stairway to the lower level. A metaphor for the group, the risers represent the individual artists, while the stairway the collective unit.

A full renovation of the "basement" created an extra bedroom and entertainment space and with the addition of the fireplace, an all year round lower level space.

Although the kitchen underwent an extensive renovation, the 1973 "vintage" copper Sears self-cleaning oven was kept as a hark back to the time when the house was built.

In order to avoid artist's remorse from the first spill onto the pristine wide board pine floor, the studio was "Pollocked" by children from Firehouse Arts, the local art studio for kids. Moved from Yarmouth town center, the studio furnishings, largely are turn of the century to match the age of the building circa 1890.

An honest restoration of a home and and vintage weighing station, how could you be more "green"?
