Maine Artists | Nathan Campbell

A native of the Boothbay area, Nathan Campbell has been drawing and painting since pre-school days. He grew up in East Boothbay, Maine and in 1983, while a junior at BRHS, won 1st place in the First District Congressional Art Competition. He also was awarded 3rd place in the Still Life category of the national Artists' Magazine's "Best Art of 2001" and was selected to exhibit in the Pastel Painters of Maine annual December show in Kennebunk where he earned the merit award. He was chosen as one of the "Top Artists of 2002" by Pastel Journal.

Recently, Nathan has been painting with acrylics on canvas. His landscapes feature a muted palette, catching nostalgic glimpses of places around the corner or over the next hill - with shadows of out-of-view structures and intricate details of grass, wood and rocks laid in. His interior scenes are sometimes dream-like and haunting... with bits and pieces showing the presence of former inhabitants or mirrors reflecting the scenery of a near-by window. In the past two years, Nathan has been experimenting with portraits of various well-worn tools and found objects such as fishing lures, shells and lucky stones.
